| Background Matthews Brewing
Company was established in May 2005 by Stuart Matthews and Susan
Appleby with the aim of brewing high-quality cask conditioned ales. The emphasis throughout
our brewing is on the use of traditional techniques and quality
ingredients such as floor-malted barley from the nearby Warminster
Maltings. Building work started in the brewery in August 2005, soon followed by the installation of 5 Brl (820L) brewing equipment supplied by Johnson Brewing & Engineering Ltd. Our first brew was completed on 25th October 2005. The brewery is
situated in Timsbury, about 7 miles south of Bath, on the site of the
erstwhile Hayeswood Colliery. Hayeswood was part of the group of collieries that made up
the North Somerset coalfield (our house is on the site of another of
these old collieries). Hayeswood itself
closed in about 1862, although mining elsewhere in North Somerset
continued into the 1960’s. When Hayeswood
was active, the coal would have been taken away on the Somerset Coal
Canal, starting at Paulton Basin and joining the Kennet & Avon near
Bath at the bottom of
Brassknocker Hill. From whence comes the
name of our first regular beer. Since July 2006 Matthews Brewing Company have been members of
SIBA, the Society of
Independent Brewers. |
